Travel and Transport in Uganda

Getting to Uganda is easy, with regular flights from across Europe to Entebbe International Airport, situated 40km from the capital Kampala. Alternatively, you can fly into Nairobi in Kenya,Kigali in Rwanda and take a connecting flight or one of the several direct coaches to Kampala. Other flights to Entebbe International Airport include Ethiopian Airlines from Bole International Airport-Ethiopia,Emirates from Dubai,Turkish Air from Turkey among others.

There are local charters from Entebbe Airport and Kajjansi Airstrip to National parks including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (at Kihihi & Kisoro airstrips), Queen Elizabeth National Park (at Kasese & Mweya airstrips), Murchison Falls National Park (at Pakuba, Bugungu & Chobe airstrips), and Kidepo Valley National Park (Kidepo airstrip).

Public transport include the buses/coaches, and the unique matatus also known as the taxis. These are generally inexpensive and connect all major towns near national parks and attractions.

Nevertheless you shall require a private vehicle to explore the game parks more so during the game drives or reach key areas of the parks. You could hire a private vehicle for a self drive or with a driver to take you to and around the national parks. There are a number of car hire companies in Uganda. The cost of hiring a vehicle with unlimited mileage, taxes & insurance included ranges from $100 per day for small cars to $250 per day for the Land Cruiser. The cost also varies from company to company and could be negotiable.

The road conditions interconnecting the major towns have been greatly improved which has also greatly reduced on the travel time. However many of the off roads to the national parks are still dirt and in poor conditions. They are most challenging during the rainy season. Most challenging roads include: The dirt roads from Kabale to Bwindi via Ruhija, Buhoma, & Nkuringo. The dirt road from Murchison Falls via the Albertine escarpment through Hoima, Kagadi to Kyenjojo
